The Chateau Gardens
The grounds at Chateau de Detilly are a little
paradise. Sweeping lawns, flower gardens, fountains,
statues, and lampposts reminiscent of 19th century Paris
add to the old world ambiance. Stroll through pretty
gardens and lawns dappled with shade from century-old
trees. Relax in a courtyard bursting with blooms. Explore
the paths in search of charming statues. Feed the goldfish
and enjoy the grand fountain in a private lake surrounded
by weeping willows.
Then there’s the spectacular rose garden. There are
roses of all colors and types in all their glory—hybrids
and old-fashioned roses; the perfect little pink bud and
the outrageously bold red blossom; yellow and pink and
salmon and red roses; variegated roses splashed with
colors; all blooming in abundance--more than 6,000 roses,
in fact. An elaborate arrangement of arches, benches,
shallow canals and fountains establish order in the
overabundance of blooms and create a magical environment.
It is the epitome of romance: a pretty bride, a proud
groom, a sunny day, ladies in wide-brimmed summer hats, the
clink of champagne glasses, and a stolen kiss among the
roses after an exchange of vows in the little chapel - this
is the very stuff of dreams-come-true.
Just off the breakfast room is a gracious terrace,
surrounded by flowers. Flanked by two stone lions, a lovely
fountain creates the sound of softly running water in the
courtyard and gardens. It’s a delightful spot for lunch on
a lovely summer day.
